21 Days of Prayer
DAY 10 - John 17:9-12
9 "My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. 10 All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. 11 Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are. 12 During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.
CONSIDER THE CONTEXT
Jesus is preparing for his final hours here on earth. He packs in as much about Himself and His Father's Plan as He can to those around Him. Towards the end of this amazing time with his closest followers, Jesus prays one of the most powerful and touching prayers one can imagine. Today's portion of this prayer focuses on Jesus' heart for those of us who call ourselves believers in Him.
CONSIDER THE IMPLICATIONS
One of the most important words in the Christian world is "unity." Unfortunately the Christian world has chosen, at times, to live in disunity. Jesus makes this word a central part of this prayer to emphasize the fact that "we are one." Not only are we one with Jesus, we are one with God the Father. But, we are also one with each other. This unity was an important enough concept for Jesus to relate that he made it a central point of one of the final prayers recorded by our Savior.
CONSIDER THE PRAYER
Lord, I stand for unity today. I stand for unity in my Church. I stand for unity among all the Churches that move under the banner of the Power of your name. I ask for protection for all the members of these Churches. I ask for your glory to come to them and to be seen through them. Thank you that you have not lost a single one of us. Now Lord, add to our numbers. Add to the ranks of those of us who live by the name you gave us. Let the world see the unity we have through you and let them hunger to be part of this growing body that you call your own. Amen.
